Lorne and Barb Smith have been active in square dancing for many years as both dancers, club organizers and now as callers.

Hailing from Red Deer Alberta Lorne took Beginners classes with the Fawn Teens back in the fall of 1967. Enjoying the activity so much, he and others started the Bandalaro’s in 1979 where he was the president for two years. By 1981 he was teaching and calling the Plus level with the Bandalaro’s.

Barb started her dancing in 1977 with the University of British Columbia Campus Cavaliers. Working in the club executive she performed a variety of duties including organizing special dances on the campus over a period of 6 years.

At a Christmas dance on the campus called by Ray Brendzy in 1983 Barb met Lorne and their square dance careers have continued from there. In 1986 they attended the Alberta Callers School and were calling Advanced dances by 1987 and Challenge by 1990. Lorne added Round Dance cueing to his repertoire in 1986.

The late 1980’s saw Lorne and Barb calling, teaching and cueing in the Red Deer region with the Lacombe Rounds, Rocky Whirlaways, Pairs & Spares, and Nebraska Knot Heads. The 1990’s saw the move into Calgary while maintaining the Gycpee’s Challenge club in Red Deer since he started it in 1988 to present. In Calgary they have run the Mainstream Plus club Acey Pluses since 1999, and the Advanced Club Double A’s since 1998. Presently Lorne and Barb are building up a new Calgary C1 group.

Lorne and Barb were the Program Chair couple for the 2004 Canadian National Convention in Calgary. Recently they have served on the executive of the Alberta Callers Association and the Calgary Callers Association (1999-2003).

Lorne and Barb will be assisting Daryl Clendenin from Portland, Oregon in conducting a Caller's School for the Square & Round Dance Instructor's Association of Alberta. This event takes place from August 15-19, 2005 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.

In the fall of 2005 Lorne and Barb will be calling for the Calgary Swinging Singles Square Dance Club. This will include teaching Mainstream on Monday evenings and calling Mainstream on 2nd & 4th Wednesdays.

In the fall of 2007 Lorne and Barb will be calling for the Banff Trailers on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month.
